Director: Ruth Heritage

Duty | Tour is a 30 minute experimental site specific audio walk, which takes audiences through the streets by Hepburn House Reserve HQ, Edinburgh

A rapid response piece to open up difficult questions about women’s experiences in the army exploring the complexities and duties of female friendship in a male dominated environment, in the aftermath of a traumatic situation on tour whilst in the army. The piece opens up questions around our individual battle lines, experiences of women in male-dominated situations, the difficulty of articulating and understanding gender-based trauma, and how we see home after having experiences that take us far beyond our community. Tackling the subject matter through immersive storytelling, exploring human behaviour with wry insights and sensitivity, the writing, audio, and immersive direction create a space for the audience to become one with our reservist and her experiences.

Metal Remote Residency- August 2020, Artist In Residence

What I leave behind I bring with me - is available on Apple Podcasts

Walking and recording became a daily activity during lockdown. It became a way of listening more deeply to where I lived, listening to newly uncovered sounds. Without the veil of traffic noise, there was an unexpected space to hear other things, hidden reverbs, tonalities, echos. Sounds from outside became amplified in the silence, bringing the outdoor ambience into the inside through open windows, more noticeable than ever.

I became interested in the difference in the sound of spaces, their resonance, how as a recordist sounds are made, and how I listened differently through the act of recording whilst walking. I am interested in how the body and voice becomes part of the field recording, a self-surveillance of unconscious actions and improvised routine, and how these sounds can be used within a composition.

The podcast “What I leave Behind I Bring With Me” is a work in progress and a way of sharing some of the compositions using an alternative and freely accessible online platform, giving me the freedom to experiment with how I present my work.

More information about the residency can be found at Metal Culture

Beyond The Bats - 2018
Film Maker/Sound Design

The act of sustained, deep listening in a familiar place whilst recording enabled me to connect to an area in a completely new way. Through the course of daily listening and recording walks in Arnside, Lancashire, I became more immersed in my sound environment. When listening back to the recordings I had captured, I heard chance encounters, mistakes, familiar voices, a mixture of dialects, tentative vocalisations, environmental sounds within the context of a familiar place, they resonated with my memories of the area making me feel both nostalgic and emotional. My sound film became an unexpected sonic exploration of my emotional attachment to place connected to childhood memory and family.
